This is why a lot of infant and toddler “training” toothpastes don’t contain any Fluoride. Because children’s toothpastes typically have a good flavor, children have been known to sneakily “eat” it. If you end up catching your child with a half empty tube of toothpaste, poison control will most likely end up asking for your child’s weight, how much they consumed, and then tell you to give your child some milk or yogurt since calcium binds to Fluoride. Nowadays, Fluoride “toxicity” and things like fluorosis have become more worrisome due to the uncontrolled amounts of fluoride in the water supply in certain areas. Though Fluoride has been found to be a neurotoxin, it really depends on the dosage, which is what makes many people’s argument on toothpaste difficult. Because if the correct amount of Fluoride toothpaste is used – a smear for kids under the age of 3 and a pea-sized amount for those 3 and older – then you don’t have anything to worry about.

On the other hand, micro-Hydroxapatite is derived from natural materials and therefore is available in higher dosages. It seems to help with remineralization as does Fluoride, but higher level research is still needed.

What about the other Ingredients?

In the grand scheme of things, what we really need to worry about is some of the other ingredients used in traditional toothpastes. As “cleaner” choices are becoming a warranted trend, we should be aware of certain ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial dyes, triclosan, parabens, and carrageenan. Most of the cleaner brands are incorporating Hydroxyapatite instead of Fluoride, but there are still some brands out there with cleaner options that still contain Fluoride.
